Dear Skip,
Arts and business? How are these two things linked? In this
edition, I'd like to recognize and encourage the excitement growing
around Philadelphia and the Creative Economy.
Most business people believe that we are solidly entrenched in
the Information Age. The reality is that we are rapidly
transitioning out of the Information Age and moving rapidly into a
Creative Age. This has dramatic business implications.

NatPal's Nate Stevens in Business Week! |
 |
|
I first met Nate Stevens nearly a year ago as a new entrepreneur
in the Wharton VIP program where I periodically consult. Nate's
passion and energy is infecting. His business, which helps local
retail businesses to be found on the web, has grown rapidly
since then (just look at his case studies!). He has been
profiled in Business Week Online as an emerging class of college
tech entrperenuers. You can check his busines out at

Book review: Dan Pink's A Whole New Mind
|
|
|
|
Author Dan Pink discusses the move from the Information Age to
the Conceptual Age. In the first part of the book, he provides
key insights into how the human brain processes information. Our
economy is shifting from valuing left brain (logical, rational)
processing to right brain (creative) processing. Pink outlines
the key drivers behind this shift (Abundance, Asia, Automation).
He then presents a vision of where the value vector is heading
(High Touch, High Concept).
In the second part of the book, Pink goes on to provide a
prescription for all of us to follow if we want to embrace the
Creative Economy. The "six senses" we need to develop are
Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play and Meaning. He outlines
some terrific examples of each and provides a boatload of
resources.
Pink's work provided me with a diagnostic that I could use to
assess how well I'm geared for the Creative Economy. The result?
I have some work to do. While I have a number of the pieces ...
for example, I'm a good synthesizer - giving me an edge in
Symphony but I'm a crummy story teller. Just the facts, ma'am -
so I'm working on that. A Whole New Mind is a great read for any
business person looking to build the basic skills for our next
economic boom.
